A quiet service,
offered with respect.
Cross-border legal counsel for NRIs, businesses & families.
As a matter of conscience, Kavao Law sets aside a portion of its time each year for pro bono work — free legal assistance offered voluntarily, to individuals who genuinely cannot afford professional cost. It is our small contribution to the nation and to humanity.
Why we do this
Access to justice should not depend on the ability to pay. Every lawyer, in every generation, has a duty to serve — not only the clients who can afford them, but the community at large. We believe that the practice of law is a public trust, and that a portion of every lawyer's time belongs to those who cannot pay for it.
Our pro bono work is voluntary. It is not advertising, not a promotional campaign, and not a pathway to new commercial clients. We do not publicise individual matters, we do not name beneficiaries, and we do not use pro bono work to promote the firm. We do it quietly, because it is right.
Because our resources are limited, we cannot help everyone who writes to us. Every request is read with care, and every request receives a response. But acceptance depends on the merit of the matter, our capacity at the time, and whether our involvement would genuinely change an outcome.
The categories we give priority to.
Statutory legal aid categories
Individuals whose circumstances fall within the categories traditionally recognised for legal aid — including women, children, persons with disabilities, members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, victims of trafficking or disaster, and industrial workmen.
Financial hardship
Individuals or families whose annual household income is very limited, and for whom paying professional fees would mean forgoing essentials. Documentation may be requested to support a hardship claim.
Exceptional circumstances
Matters involving a serious injustice, a fundamental rights question, or a systemic concern that warrants involvement beyond ordinary criteria. These are rare and assessed individually.
How a request is considered.
Every enquiry is read confidentially. We may not be able to help in every case, but we will respond to every serious request.

01
Write to us
Send a short note describing your matter, the jurisdiction, and the reason you are seeking pro bono assistance. Please keep it brief at this stage — no more than a page.
-
02
Initial review
We read your enquiry and decide whether it falls within the categories we consider. If it does, we may ask for basic information about your circumstances.
-
03
Merit and capacity check
We assess whether the matter has a reasonable legal basis and whether we have the capacity to take it on. Pro bono capacity is limited, and priority is given to matters where our involvement can make a real difference.

What our pro bono programme is not.
To keep the programme honest and sustainable, we want to be clear about its limits.
Assistance is discretionary
Pro bono assistance is offered at the firm's discretion. There is no entitlement to assistance, and not every eligible matter can be accepted.
Not a replacement for legal aid
For matters that require long-term representation, the statutory legal aid system is the appropriate route. Our programme is not a substitute for it.
Not a pathway to paid work
Pro bono clients are not expected or encouraged to become paying clients. The two categories are kept entirely separate.
Not publicised
We do not name beneficiaries, publish case studies, or use pro bono matters for promotion. This page exists only to explain how the programme works.
Note: This page is provided for information only. It does not constitute advertising, solicitation, or an invitation to engage our services. Pro bono assistance is offered voluntarily at the firm's discretion, subject to eligibility and capacity. We do not publicise individual pro bono matters.
